I have obstructive sleep apnea and need a CPAP machine. How do I decide what to do next?

If your doctor has prescribed CPAP therapy for your obstructive sleep apnea, there are many things to consider as you move forward through the treatment process. Whether you have had a recent sleep study, a home sleep study with Synergy Sleep Health, or are already a CPAP user, you will want to choose a CPAP provider with experience that you can trust to help your through some of the challenges that can come along with being a CPAP user.

When you think about a CPAP machine, you will want to think about working with a Durable Medical Equipment (DME) company where they will work one-on-one with you to explain and educate you on the entire process, including follow up information and feedback for both you and your doctor.

Synergy Sleep Health uses only CPAP devices that have a cellular modem, Wi-fi and/or Bluetooth to transmit the CPAP data on a regular basis. Data is usually transmitted within one hour after you discontinue use in the morning. This data allows the respiratory therapist and sleep coach at Synergy Sleep Health to monitor the effectiveness of your CPAP therapy. Data-capable CPAP machines can mean more effective and customized sleep apnea care. In the first few days, weeks, and months of CPAP therapy, we will regularly follow up with you as we offer strategies to work through any challenges you might be having as you adjust to your new CPAP or even something as simple as new style mask. Essentially, you are working with a sleep coach to offer solutions and support. The downloaded information from your machine will be reported to your doctor so he/she can stay up to date on how your CPAP treatment is progressing. Early intervention and communication with our patients have resulted in better CPAP compliance and overall patient satisfaction.

The biggest fear I hear from people about CPAP is having to wear a CPAP mask. It terrifies many! At Synergy Sleep Health, we take the time to fit you with a mask that will allow you to be successful in using your CPAP. Many times, that means we have you try on numerous mask styles and sizes until you find one that you like and feels comfortable. CPAP masks are not a one size fits all. Just because your brother or friend likes a certain style doesn’t mean it’s a good fit for you. If that mask style doesn’t work, Synergy Sleep Health has a 30-day mask guarantee program to allow you to exchange the CPAP mask and find something that will be a better fit for you.

Whether you are purchasing your CPAP machine and supplies by self-pay, using your health insurance, or paying with an HSA account, there are many things to consider. At Synergy Sleep Health, we will communicate with your insurance company and help you look at all your options to provide you with a transparent approach to the costs and what may work best for you and your budget.

You can’t put a price tag on good sleep health. Investing in a CPAP machine and working with a DME company that you can trust is an investment in your health, which could potentially save you money in healthcare costs in the long run.
